The IYCM Ambassador Project in Nepal: Youth for Climate Education.
We are thrilled to share that the IYCM Ambassador project on “Climate Education” successfully conducted a workshop for school students on 1st August 2024 at Rhombus School, Bhaktapur, Nepal. The workshop saw the participation of 70 students from the lower secondary level.
This session was led by Maya Kandel (IYCM Ambassador). The initiative aimed to empower students through climate education, which is particularly crucial in Nepal. It equips young minds with the knowledge and skills to understand and address the country’s unique climate challenges.
Nepal ranks as the 4th most climate-vulnerable country globally and the 30th in terms of flood risk. Research indicates that landslides claim 100 lives annually, while floods result in 50 fatalities each year. Urban areas face significant impacts from flooding and inundation. Additionally, Nepal is experiencing an annual temperature rise of 0.04°C to 0.06°C, with higher increases in high-altitude regions. By learning about climate change, students can become more aware of these environmental issues affecting their communities.
During the session, the children were highly interactive, in same school representing diverse geographical areas. They shared the specific climate change issues they face in their own communities and discussed sustainable solutions. The students also committed to reducing their carbon footprint and avoiding the excessive use of plastic products.
The program at Rhombus School represents a crucial step in climate education. It fostered a sense of responsibility among students and empowered them to take action through small steps such as solid waste segregation at home, reusing and reducing waste, conserving water, avoiding plastic materials, and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly practices. Ultimately, climate education helps build a generation that is prepared to create a more sustainable and secure future for all.
