IYCM – Change Yourself Change The World

85 Students in Kalihati, Tangail Join the Call for a Nuclear-Free World

Tangail, 28 October 2026 — International Youth Change Maker (IYCM), through its IYCM-TANGAIL team, held an awareness session titled “Youth for Peace, Equality and a Nuclear-Free World” at Madrasa Darul Islam Muhammadiya Balla Fazil (B.A.) Madrasa in Kalihati, Tangail. More than 85 students took part in the two-hour session, including students from Class Eight.

Why this session matters

Nuclear weapons remain a serious threat to humanity, international security and global peace. Their harm goes beyond immediate destruction to human lives, public health, the environment and future generations. Yet young people, especially outside big cities, rarely get the chance to learn about these issues or about international efforts toward disarmament.

What students learned

  • Introduction to nuclear weapons: their destructive power and consequences
  • Humanitarian and environmental impact: what nuclear weapons do to people and the planet
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945): why these tragedies must never be repeated
  • Nuclear disarmament: the NPT and the TPNW
  • Youth for peace: the role of young people in building peace, equality and a nuclear-free world

The volunteers explained these topics in simple language, using historical examples so that younger students could follow them.

Peace for people, care for the planet

The session also linked global peace to everyday care for the environment. Students learned about:

  • Reducing plastic use
  • Disposing of waste properly
  • Adopting eco-friendly habits

To reinforce the message, every student received an eco-friendly pen.

Students’ voices for the world

Students drew peace signs and “No Nukes” messages on their palms and held placards reading “Build Peace, Not Bombs — The Youth Are Watching.” They also wrote down their own thoughts and hopes for a peaceful, nuclear-free world. These will go toward a joint Youth Declaration that IYCM intends to share with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and world leaders.

Teachers’ support

The madrasa’s teachers welcomed the initiative from the start. When the team first visited to ask permission, the teachers showed strong interest in IYCM-TANGAIL’s work and promised their full support. After the session, they praised the overall arrangement.

Key outcomes

  • More than 85 students engaged in discussions on nuclear weapons and their consequences.
  • Students were introduced to Hiroshima-Nagasaki and to disarmament treaties (NPT, TPNW).
