Rules and terms

Rules, regulations, terms and conditions

Every IYCM volunteer agrees to the following. Please read them carefully before you apply.

1. Code of conduct

Every IYCM volunteer agrees to:

  • Treat everyone with respect, whatever their age, gender, religion, ethnicity, disability or background.
  • Be honest, punctual and reliable, and tell your coordinator early if you cannot attend an activity.
  • Never harass, bully, threaten or discriminate against anyone, in person or online.
  • Never use or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs during IYCM activities.
  • Never accept gifts, money or favours from participants, beneficiaries or partners in return for IYCM work.

Much of our work involves children and adolescents. To keep them safe, volunteers must:

  • Never be alone with a child out of sight of other adults or volunteers.
  • Never contact a child privately by phone or social media outside an IYCM activity.
  • Never photograph or film a child without permission from IYCM and the child’s parent, guardian or school.
  • Report any concern about a child’s safety or wellbeing to your coordinator or IYCM straight away.

Any breach of these rules may lead to immediate removal from IYCM and, where required, a report to the authorities.

  • Volunteers work under the guidance of an IYCM coordinator and follow the plan agreed for each activity.
  • Activities in schools, colleges or communities need approval from IYCM and the host institution beforehand.
  • Volunteers may not collect money, donations or fees in IYCM’s name without written permission.
  • Volunteers may not use IYCM activities for any political party, election campaign or religious preaching.
  • Wear the IYCM T-shirt or ID where it has been provided for an activity.
  • Keep IYCM materials, equipment and documents safe and return them when asked.
  • Use IYCM’s name and logo only for approved IYCM activities, and never change the logo.
  • Do not speak to the media or make official statements on IYCM’s behalf without permission.
  • Do not create pages, groups or accounts that claim to represent IYCM without approval.
  • When posting about IYCM activities, be accurate and respectful and follow the safeguarding rules above.
  • IYCM uses the information in your application to assess it, contact you and manage your volunteering. We do not sell your personal data.
  • The photo you upload may be published on IYCM’s website and social media if you are selected, as the form explains.
  • The application asks whether you would donate blood and whether your contact details may be shared publicly during a national disaster or blood emergency. Your details are only shared in that way if you answer Yes.
  • You can ask IYCM to correct or delete your information at any time through our Contact Us page.
  • Volunteering with IYCM is unpaid and is not employment. Volunteers receive no salary, allowance or other financial benefit.
  • Any expense must be approved by IYCM in writing before it is spent; unapproved expenses cannot be reimbursed.
  • Volunteers take part at their own risk and should follow all safety instructions given during activities.
  • Certificates are issued to volunteers who complete their agreed activities and reports.
  • Every certificate has a unique number that can be checked on IYCM’s Certificate Verification page.
  • Certificates that are copied, changed or forged will be cancelled.
  • IYCM may suspend or end a volunteer’s involvement at any time if these rules are broken or IYCM’s reputation is put at risk.
  • Volunteers can leave at any time by telling their coordinator, and should hand over any IYCM materials and ongoing work.
  • When volunteering ends, you must stop using IYCM’s name, logo and volunteer titles.
  • By submitting the application form you confirm that the information you give is true and that you have read and agree to these rules, regulations, terms and conditions.
  • IYCM may update these terms. The latest version is always published on this page.
